Recent research highlights that women typically require more sleep than men, largely due to their increased brain activity.
A study from Duke Medical University involving 210 middle-aged participants revealed that women face more significant health issues related to sleep deprivation, such as heightened levels of depression, anger, and psychological distress. Lead author Edward Suarez noted, "For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger," effects that appear to be less severe in men.
Professor Jim Horne from Loughborough University pointed out that women's tendency to multitask and their greater adaptability result in higher brain usage throughout the day. This elevated cognitive demand means they need more sleep for proper recovery and repair.
